The equipment that comes with above ground pools have evolved. From canister sand filters and small pumps, today, some pumps and filters are sizeable and long-lasting. Also, the design of swimming pool grating has changed, and today, they are not only attractive but work better to ensure that swimming pool areas remain safe.

There are some things, however, that remains unchanged—for instance, the return and skimmer openings where the pool meets the filter and pump. Water circulation is affected because with these two next to each other, the water barely circulates to a far distance, and the water at the pool’s bottom is mostly unaffected. This lack of proper circulation creates problems with the water’s chemical balance.

This article explores the best ways that you can ensure efficient circulation in above ground pools by installing the main drain. Also, startling statistics about swimming pool falls reveal the need for installing pool grating, which is discussed further in this article. Read on for more.

Main Drains for Above Ground Pools

In-ground pools come with main drains, so it is not a concern for those who have this type of pool. A main drain can be put in place when those with above ground pools need better circulation. Unfortunately, not many pool owners know this because many retailers do not sell main drain kits. While this idea is a good one, installing main drains in your above ground pool may not be as easy as ABC. This is why you need detailed know-how to do it. The next section explains the process further.

Main Drain Installation

Materials:

  • The main drain for vinyl pools
  • PVC glue, a hacksaw, shovel, tape measure, and silicone
  • 1.5 inches schedule 40 PVC pipe. It should be an estimated 20 feet.
  • A 1.5″ tee PVC fitting, a 1.5″ coupling, 3 1.5″ male threaded slip, 3 1.5″ elbows
  • Duct tape, screwdriver, and utility blade

Process

  1. Trench digging: Measure in from the wall in three different locations so that you can know the pool’s centre. When you know where it is, dig a trench towards the pool skimmer’s right side. Ensure that you are not digging too deep because the pipe should be installed at nearly a superficial level.
  2. Preparation of the main drain: Put your silicon to use in the bottom of the threaded male slip and the threaded plug before gluing it to a pipe. Be sure to place duct tape around the main drain’s entire opening when the gasket at the bottom is lined up with screw holes. Using one layer of duct tape ensures that the drain’s inside and screw holes are completely covered.
  3. Setting the main drain: This simply involves placing the attached pipe and drain in place. At this point, you can use a tool such as a torpedo level to ensure that it is level then put back the earth around it.
  4. Connecting with the skimmer and pump: Next, find where your pool’s skimmer is located and plumb the PVC piping from there up to the pump. The process is not yet over; you still have to add the remaining valve to the same line such that there are two PVC lines and two valves heading to the front part of the pool. These two lines are then connected to the pump by piping.
  5. Cutting the main drain: This is, for most people, the most stressful part of the process. After getting the wrinkles away from the pool’s liner, you should start filling the pool with water. You will need a few inches of water, and this is when you will know where your pool’s main drain top part is.

Once the water is pressing down in the pool, you will get to see the main drain’s screwholes. It is at this point that the ring of the main drain and gasket and screw it down on the drain. Approximately ten screws should all be screwed through the liner.

When everything is in place, you should cut and remove the liner that is inside the ring. Finally, screw down the lid, and you will have successfully installed the main drain.

The importance of Swimming Pool Overflow Grating

Pool grates are important because they prevent overflow in swimming pools. Also, they add to the aesthetic appeal of the swimming pool area, thanks to the appealing designs.

The importance of anti-slip pool grates cannot be underestimated. Falls result in traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries. Also, slipping fractures and soft tissue damage and drowning should the slip result in the victim falling in the water, and they cannot swim. Using swimming pool grates reduces the chances of slipping and falling. Above the ground, swimming pools face problems with proper circulation of water. However, the main drains can significantly reduce the problems associated with improper circulation in above ground pools. The article has succinctly covered how to install a main drain.
